Specialized SCBA

This course will include an overview of the safety features and limitations of the department's SCBA's Warning Devices, Emergency Bypass Operation, Medical Signs and Symptoms limiting the effective use of SCBA ; review and demonstrate required emergency operations when an SCBA fails, review and demonstrate Required Emergency Operations related to self-rescue situations (reduced profile, quick escape, swim maneuver, etc.); review and demonstrate communications with facepiece in place including communications associated  with SCBA emergencies (May Day Transmissions); review and demonstrate Emergency techniques using an SCBA to assist other members (RIC/UAC & EBSS)

 

Course consists of two sessions; one department specific session (3 hour) at the Firehouse and one field session (approximately 6 hours) at the Fire Academy, which will include Mask Confidence (Self Rescue) Evolutions, RIC/UAC Evolutions, Locate and Don SCBA in simulated IDLH environment and Advanced Search Techniques with SCBA donned.  Please note that the evolutions conducted during the field session are considered physically demanding.  Only those firefighters who are medically qualified as interior firefighters and are adequately physically fit will successfully complete the course.  Students who fail to complete any evolutions (due to lack of demonstrated skill or stamina) will not pass.
